What is so great about Key West?
It is a historic small town. The Old Town section of Key West is among the largest collection of preserved historic structures in the world. The architecture is quaint, and interesting. The landscaping is tropical, and unusual. Many of the full time residents know one another. The locals are proud and friendly. Key West has gone through a number of booms and busts with Turtle canning, sponging, the Navy, Shrimping, drug smuggling, real estate development, and tourism all have been key industries.

It is Whimsical and unique- walking the street on an average day you are likely to see Pirates, chickens, six toed cats, Marilyn Monroe, and people having a good time drinking Pina Coladas and Margaritas at lunch. Key West is “the end of the road,” and a Caribbean get away. Key West has long been a popular place for authors and artists. Key West is the least judgmental place in the world. Bicycles, are still a very popular means of touring the island, and commuting to work. There are parades, festivals, and special events with extreme regularity. Key West celebrates holidays and special events (whether real or imagined) New Year’s Eve, Veteran’s Day and the Conch Republic Days and Fantasyfest, with more enthusiasm and excitement per capita than anywhere else.

Sun and Water- Key West has extraordinary weather, warmer than the rest of Florida in winter (It has never been colder than 41, in 1932), and cooler in the summer, breezes from the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico keep it pleasant. There is something for everyone on the water, snorkeling on shallow reefs teeming with tropical fish, sightseeing with Bottlenosed Dolphin, Scuba diving on reefs and wrecks, and a variety of fishing that is difficult to believe. Flats and Shallow water for bonefish, tarpon and permit, Reefs and wrecks for Snapper, grouper and cobia, Offshore for Marlin, Sailfish, Dolphin, Wahoo and Tuna, Night fishing for Snapper, Sharks, and Swordfish.

Explain Conch
It is pronounced “konk”. It is a family of large saltwater dwelling snails, that produce large attractive shells. Fishing for Conch (Diving or walking in the shallows and picking them up is illegal in the Keys. The shells can be played as a wind instrument by drilling a hole in the spiral end of the shell and playing like a trumpet. As the meat is very tough it can be eaten by cutting into strips and pounded, or chopped into small pieces.
Conch is a nickname for someone born in Key West and the mascot of Key West High School.

Where is the beach?
Yes, for an island the beach is surprisingly far away. The beach at Fort Zachary Taylor (Fort Zack) is our favorite.
